In historic terms, Porto is behind Benfica in terms of honours won, but there is no doubting the fact that they have been the premier team in Portugal since the turn of the century.

Jose Mourinho managed them to a treble in the 2002-2003 season, winning the Uefa Cup, before going on to win the Champions League the next season.

The fans are proud of the team’s history and they always make their voices heard at the games. The fan’s passion will be proudly expressed during the games, especially if they are playing local rival Boavista. These games can often get heated with the fans enjoying the back and forth trading of chants and insults.

There is a small, dangerous section of Porto Ultras that need to be watched out for as they are not fans of many English teams and may look to start trouble.

Porto have been entrenched as one of the ‘big three’ of Portuguese football for some time now and their fans are used to regular title challenges and carrying on their prominent European pedigree in the Champions League where they are consistent performers and often get out of the gorup stage. The fans have something to celebrate and cheer for most weeks and you really get the feeling that they love their club. Deciding the champion often come down to the last days of the season and so you can be guaranteed a good atmosphere no matter the time of year you visit.
